    Product Information

    THE ORPINGTON FOWL

By Will Burdett and Joseph Batty

The most comprehensive book ever published on the ORPINGTON FOWL by two poultry experts and writers. Never before has the range of colours been illustrated as shown within the book and the jacket illustration, painted by Paul Chapman, a well-known artist who specialises in poultry breeds. Full coverage of the Orpington Fowl from its introduction by William Cook through to the present time. Never before has their been such an exhaustive treatment of the breed, showing how it was developed and through the years how it has been changed and then modified to the present day. An effort has been made to make varieties conform to the one standard so that one; e.g. Buff, is not quite different in type to, say, the Blue. It must be recognized that the Black Orpington is not the only variety which exists and the aim is to develop a "Family of One Breed" rather than a number of sub-breeds. Besides a comprehensive range of illustrations to show how the breed appeared in its 100 years, there are also colour plates to demonstrate the nature of the different varieties. Even the rare or extinct varieties are shown so that fanciers who would like to recreate the extinct varieties can do so.

    Other features are:

    1. Standards and what they mean. The key requirements are analysed and explained. Faults listed and explained.

    2. Shows and showing; how to get the best results.

    3. The Utility aspects and what they mean today. Can the Orpington be adopted for Free Range?

    4. Breeding, feeding, and rearing chicks. Artificial insemination

    5. Royal Patronage and the appointment of Will Burdett as the Keeper for the Buff Orpingtons kept by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.

This is intended to be the most comprehensive book ever written on the breed and is now in production. It is written by two experts in poultry matters and, as is known generally, Will Burdett is without doubt the leading authority on Orpingtons. However, this book is about all Orpingtons and not just those kept by the authors. It is also the history of poultry keeping because William Cook, the man who developed the Orpington was also an important pioneer in poultry farming.
